So, does dye remover merely revert armor to its original color or does it actually recover the dye as a usable item?

I just reverts it.
However, the original colour of some armours is different to the colour it was when you first got it.
For example, some Warrior armours go a nice gold colour when dye remover is used.

You can't get salvage or id kits back either.
They don't cost all that much.
Sure, black and silver cost a lot, but the 200-300 for other dyes isn't much of a worry.

You can try mixing dye remover with dye for a sort of sheeny glossy version of that color.

every time i use dye remover i get the color purple.
